Play Creation Workshop Series
For 7-12 grade

We are offering five workshops and each workshop is self-contained – students may attend as many as they want. All are focused on learning how to create a play from different perspectives – storyteller, actor, playwright, tech. These workshops will eventually lead to Young Footliters fall production – Dreamland, a play written by Matt Falduto and workshopped by Young Footliters actors. Workshops start in November. Registration is currently open for first two workshops.  Registration for other workshops will open soon.

Workshop Descriptions:

  1. Storytelling Workshop

Dreamland is written in a storytelling style, with the actors telling the story as well as acting as the different characters. This workshop will teach actors storytelling techniques – developing stage presence, utilizing one’s voice, utilizing one’s body and connecting with the audience.  The students will use the Dreamland script to work on these different skills.  Now open for registration.

November 18, 2017, Coralville Rec Center, 10 am – 1 pm

2.  Scene Workshop

This workshop will teach actors about dramatic action, the rules of scene writing, and how to apply that knowledge toward becoming a better actor. Using scenes from Dreamland, the actors will have the opportunity to shape a new play while learning new techniques and becoming smarter actors.  Now open for registration.

December 9, 2017,  Coralville Rec Center,  10 am – 1 pm

3.  Play Construction Workshop

This workshop is all about writing a play, using Dreamland as the example. Actors will learn the basic architecture of play writing – plot, characters, conflict, rising action, climax, resolution – and through a reading of the play, explore that architecture. While this workshop will be an excellent springboard for the aspiring playwright who wants to write her own play, knowing how a play is put together will also help actors improve their skills. Participation in this workshop comes with the added optional bonus of a critique of your own original play by Matt.  Opening soon for registration.

January 27, 2018, Coralville Public Library, 10 am – 1 pm

4.  Design Workshop 1

In this workshop, students will learn about how the set designer and the costume designer develop their vision for a show. Students will participate in creating the set and costume design for Dreamland and along the way learn a whole lot more about the tech side of theatre.  Opening soon for registration.

May 12, 2018, CCPA, 10 am – 1 pm

5.  Design Workshop 2

In this workshop, students will learn about how the lighting designer and the sound designer develop their vision for a show. Students will participate in creating the lighting and sound design for Dreamland and along the way learn a whole lot more about the tech side of theatre.  Opening soon for registration.
